Recently, a friend asked me that there is such a huge variety of diamonds available in the market… how do we differentiate between the real one and the substitutes?
This reminded me of a recent story I had done for Solitaire Magazine (Singapore) on ‘Getting the Real Deal’– The inside story on diamond substitutes and how to avoid them.
Like snowflakes, no two diamonds are exactly alike. As one of the most beautiful and expensive gemstones, diamonds have become a symbol of romance, commitment and prestige. Over the past few decades, there has been an increase in the popularity of diamonds, and supply from mines globally is at times lagging behind demand.
This has led to a considerable increase in the price of natural diamonds, and thus the proliferation of synthetic and man- made diamonds. Selling laboratory-grown diamonds as substitutes is fine, but passing them off as natural diamonds is another story — and it is a big one to watch out
